Tim Robinson
While technically not a Blazer in the truest sense, on Sept 10 1970, The Portland Trail Blazers signed former Bradley University forward #TimRobinson.
Robinson, a 6’-5” forward, has spent the past 6 years dividing time between the Harlem Globetrotters and the #ChicagoBombers of the North American Basketball League. The NABL folded in 1968 after a 4-year existence. He was recently playing with Waukegan, ILL in the Continental Basketball League where he averaged over 25 points per game Robinson played collegiately with Bradley Braves Men's Basketball during the 1960/61 season when he averaged 16.5 points & 8.6 rebounds as a sophomore. He played alongside future NBA Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame player #ChetWalker, helping guide Bradley to a 21-5 record, finishing in 6th place in the final #AP Rankings.. As the Braves did not win their conference, losing to Cincinnati Bearcats Men's Basketball, they did not qualify for NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship Tournament. Cincinnati would win the 1961 NCAA Championship. |
After the season concluded, a gambling scandal broke nationwide involving over 40 individuals and 22 different schools, including Robinson. While he was not found to be a participant in actually shaving points, Bradley Univ. would dismiss him from the school in May of 1961. Robinson, though never found to be guilty, was denied entrance to the NBA, along with Connie Hawkins, Doug Moe, Roger Brown and Tony Jackson, among others.
"Tim was a great player. He had all the talent that you could ask for in a young player. He had enough talent to go to the NBA," Walker said. "He was agile, could run the court, rebound and shoot. He had all the talent. I don't know why he didn't go to the NBA. He had the talent to be a star." Robinson was recently part of a $6M lawsuit vs the NBA, in an attempt to clear his name and enter the NBA. An agreement was reached and Robinson was granted a chance to tryout with the expansion Blazers. Despite playing well in scrimmages, Robinson would be cut from Blazers on Sept 22. “I think Tim’s problem was that he just had stayed away from competitive basketball and good players too long," said Stu Inman, the director of Player Personnel. Inman continued, "He was a good shooter, with good quickness and had some flair for innovation. It would have been interesting to have seen him when he Wass 22 years old.” Robinson was 29 during his tryout.
