|
Thru 2022, there have been a total of 64 Triple-Doubles by Blazer players, 4 of which were recorded in the playoffs
|
The origin of the term "triple-double" is unclear but it has been in the #NBA vernacular since the 1980's. Some sources claim that it was coined in the NBA by former Los Angeles Lakers public relations director Bruce Jolesch in the 1980s in order to showcase Magic Johnson's versatility, while others claim that it was coined by then Philadelphia 76ers media relations director Harvey Pollack in 1980.
Oscar Robertson was the first player to average a triple-double when he averaged 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists in the 1961/62 season. Although Robertson only achieved the feat for a full season once, his cumulative stats over his first 5 seasons gave him an average of 30.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 10.6 assists per game. Russell Westbrook is the only player to average this feat multiple times, doing so in three consecutive seasons. Westbrook finished the 2016–17 season averaging 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists, and followed it up in 2017–18 with averages of 25.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 10.3 assists. In the 2018–19 season, Westbrook averaged 22.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 10.7 assists per game. |

Greg Oden grabbed 20 rebounds in the Portland Trail Blazers 107-100 loss to the Miami Heat. On December 5, 2009, Oden injured his left knee in the first quarter of a game vs the Houston Rockets. He was taken off the court on two connected stretchers. Later, he underwent surgery for a fractured left patella and missed the rest of the season. That injury marked the second time Oden had missed major playing time due to injury.
On November 17, 2010, the team announced that Oden would have microfracture surgery on his left knee, ending his 2010–2011 season. The injury marked Oden's third NBA season cut short due to a knee injury. Oden was eventually waived on March 15, 2012. He attempted a comeback with Miami during the 2013/14 but only played 23 games before being waived again.

The Blazers tied their team record with most Field Goal Attempts in a game with 125 attempts. The Blazers initially set the mark on November 18 against the Atlanta Hawks. The 125 attempts has not been topped since. The Blazers set a team record for attempts in a half when the took 69 shots in the second half. |

CLEVELAND - The Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers played for the 6th time and it was another memorable meeting between the two new teams. Each team recorded their first win against the other, the Blazers in Game 1 and the Cavs in their third matchup, but this one brought about two rare occurrences, one to start the fourth quarter and another later in the period. With the Blazers leading 84-81 entering the final quarter, LeRoy Ellis and Walt Wesley met at mid-court for the opening jump ball. Wesley tipped the ball to fellow Cavalier Bob Lewis, who quickly passed to a streaking John Warren for what appeared to be an easy layup. Ellis, who just missed tipping the initial pass by Lewis, took off to attempt to block Warren's layup. The players met at the basket, with Ellis missing the block as Warren's shot was good. As the basket was scored, the officials blew their whistle to stop action. "When I heard the referee's whistle, I thought I had been called for traveling," Warren said later. Instead his basket only increased the Blazers lead to 86-81, as he scored in the Portland basket. Ellis as the closest Blazer was credited with the two points. |

John Johnson records his 1st triple-double as a TrailBlazer in the Portland Trail Blazers 119-108 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Johnson ended the game with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. The Suns were led by Charlie Scott's 32 points. Scott was the first African-American basketball player at the University of North Carolina where he was a two-time All-American and a three-time all-ACC selection. For his college career, he averaged 22.1 points and 7.1 rebounds in his 3-years and a career-best 27.1 points per game in his senior season. Scott led the Tar Heels to their second and third consecutive NCAA Final Four appearances in 1968 and 1969. |
Scott was a gold medalist at the 1968 Summer Olympics playing for the 1968 United States men's Olympic basketball team. Scott was the fourth leading scorer on team that was not expected to medal due to a boycott by many college players of the day.
Scott was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1970 but he had already signed a contract with the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association. Scott was named ABA Rookie of the Year after averaging 27.1 points per game. During his second season with the Squires, he set the ABA record for highest scoring average in one season (34.6 points per game). However, he became dissatisfied with life in the ABA and joined the NBA Phoenix Suns in 1972. The Suns acquired Scott in a trade with the Celtics for Paul Silas. |
Scott continued his stellar play in the NBA, representing the Suns in three straight NBA All-Star Games (1973, 1974, and 1975), then was traded to the Boston Celtics for Paul Westphal and two draft picks. With the Celtics in the 1975-76 NBA season, Scott won a championship ring against the Suns. Scott later played for the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets. He retired in 1980 with 14,837 combined ABA/NBA career points. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

📕On December 13, 1976 the Trail Blazers’ Bill Walton was featured on the cover after Portland’s 145-115 drubbing of the Indiana Pacers on November 28th at Memorial Coliseum. The 1976–77 season was the Trail Blazers' 7th season in the NBA. The revamped Blazers, led by head coach Jack Ramsay, would end up getting off to a terrific start winning 22 of their first 31 games. Portland won their last 5 games to post a record of 49–33. The Trail Blazers made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history and proceeded to stampede through the postseason.
By the time the Blazers had made it to the 1977 NBA Finals, the city of Portlandwas in the grips of "Blazermania". After losing the first 2 games of the championship series at Philadelphia, the Blazers won 4 in a row to bring the trophy to Portland. The championship capped the team's first winning season. The Blazers had a remarkable 45–6 record at home, which included a perfect 10–0 mark in the playoffs. As of 2019, this remains the only NBA Championship in Blazers franchise history, though they did make Finals appearances in 1990 and 1992, but lost to the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls, respectively. The dispersal of ABA players had been particularly beneficial to the Blazers. Maurice Lucas was simply the most dominating power forward in the game, and his arrival only boosted Walton’s effectiveness in the frontcourt. Lucas led the team in scoring at 20.2 points per game and averaged better than 11 rebounds. Coming over with Lucas from the ABA was lead guard Dave Twardzik. He had 4 pro seasons with the Virginia Squires of the ABA and was a starter in Ramsay's system. |
Another key contributor was Lionel Hollins, a second-year player out of Arizona State who averaged nearly 15 points per game.📕 (Photo Credit: SI Online) #SI65 #BillWalton #Blazermania #PortlandTrailBlazers #Blazers #BigRed#GratefulRed

The third time on National TV almost wasn't a charm for the Portland Trail Blazers during the first half vs the Los Angeles Lakersbut the home team eventually pulled out a 100-97 victory, despite 23 rebounds and 6 blocks by Elmore Smith. Down 26 points at halftime, the Blazers mounted a furious comeback led by Barry Clemens season high 24 points, matched by Sidney Wicks who also grabbed 15 rebounds. Clemens, drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1965 NBA Draft, had a productive 11-year career with five teams and retired in 1976 with career totals of 5,312 points and 2,532 rebounds. Clemens surprised many in 1973 by making it all the way to the final round in ABC television's one-on-one NBA basketball tournament as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He faced his future teammate Portland All-Star guard Geoff Petrie in the championship game at Madison Square Garden on May 6, 1973. The Blazers signed veteran forward Jim McMillian. McMillian, who played for Blazer coach Jack Ramsay in Buffalo from 1973 to 1976, started with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1971. McMillian was moved to the starting lineup replacing famed Laker Legend Elgin Baylor who retired 9 games into the season. Once in the lineup, the Lakers proceeded to win 33 straight games, culminating in winning the NBA championship, the first ever in Los Angeles.
McMillian played for the Braves after being traded by Los Angeles before the 1973/74 season, helping Buffalo to the playoffs for the next 3 straight seasons.

McMillian is also second in career rebounds (743) and holds the season records for field goals in a season (253) and career (677). Despite their outstanding winning percentages, his Columbia teams managed only one Ivy League title in a period as they battled tough Princeton teams led by future Blazer Geoff Petrie and John Hummer, as well as Penn teams, also led by future Blazers Dave Wohl and Corky Calhoun.

Magic Johnson passed for 18 assists in the Los Angeles Lakers 131-115 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers but the biggest news of the evening was the trade of the Blazers 1st round pick Walter Berry for San Antonio Spurs center Kevin Duckworth. Berry, the former St. John's forward, was selected by the Blazers with the 14th overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft. However, he did not want to play for the Blazers, preferring to be drafted by an east coast team.
There had been indications that, after weeks of lingering injuries that couldn't be diagnosed, missed practices and expressions of disgust as Berry sat on the bench, the Blazers--from management to the players--were simply fed up with last season's NCAA college Player of the Year. He played in only seven games for Portland and averaged a scant 1.9 points and 2.7 minutes a contest. Two days before the trade, in fact, Berry incurred the wrath of Steve Johnson, a Blazer center, when he refused to bring the basketballs onto the court for practice, a traditional rookie chore. ''It just seemed he didn't want to be here and he really had a disregard for his teammates and management,'' Johnson said. ''We just got fed up with it.''
Berry spent three seasons in the NBA, from 1986 to 1989, with the Blazers, San Antonio, New Jersey/ Brooklyn Nets, and Houston Rockets He holds NBA career averages of 14.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in 205 games.
The Blazers had considered drafting Duckworth with the second of their two first-round draft choices. He impressed observers during the round of postseason tournaments played before the draft. But most teams were concerned about his weight, fearful of his girth. Duckworth was 330 pounds in high school after working at a fast-food restaurant in Dolton, Ill. So instead, the Blazers used that pick to draft Arvidas Sabonis, the talented center from the Soviet Union.
Earlier this season, the Blazers lost Sam Bowie, their starting center, who fractured a bone in his leg. That sent them in search of a replacement. Duckworth, who starred at Eastern Illinois University, had hardly played for the Spurs, averaging just over 8 minutes in 12 appearances as their third- string center.

The Portland Trail Blazers were a second away from winning their second game against an established team, but alas it wasn't to be, as they fell in overtime to the Philadelphia 76ers 134-132 in a very controversial play.
The Blazers were leading 123-121 with 1 second remaining in regulation when Rick Adelman missed a free throw. Billy Cunningham, the Sixers All-Star forward, rebounded and called for a timeout, which was granted before any time came off the clock.
After the time-out, Hal Greer inbounded to backcourt mate Archie Clark, who received the ball, dribbled once before jumping up to shoot, all before the horn finally sounded, forcing the extra period. The official timer for the Blazers, Bob Polich, came under much criticism after the game but he answered the many questions directed his way. Polich is also the official timer for the Portland Buckaroos Hockey team since the 1960/61 season.
Game Notes: This is the first Over-Time game by the Blazers. Jim Barnett led the Blazers with 31 points with three other Blazers getting more than 20 points including Stan McKenzie with 22 points, Geoff Petrie at 21 and Rick Adelman with 20 more. Shaler Halimon and Dale Schlueter each grabbed 11 rebounds.
Cunningham recorded a triple-double for Philadelphia with 31 points, 27 rebounds, and 11 assists. The 27 rebounds is still the fourth most rebounds by an opponent, as well as the most by a Sixers against Portland. Backcourt partners Will Greer added 31 points and Archie Clark had 27 points.

Rasheed Wallace hit the game-winning shot, giving the Portland Trail Blazers a 113-111 victory over the Golden State Warriors but the big news was what happened afterwards. Portland's Bonzi Wells and Golden State's Chris Mills were battling for position and were still tied up after Wallace's shot went through. As the two exchanged words and began pushing each other, the Warriors' Troy Murphy entered the fray and threw punches. The Blazers' Ruben Patterson and Murphy then began fighting, with both teams pushing each other as coaches and officials tried to restore order. |
Spectators started throwing debris at the Portland players as they left the court after the game, and Wallace tried to go into the stands to get at a spectator who threw a wad of gum at him. Mills reportedly tried to get into the Blazers' locker room after the game but was restrained.
Later, as the Blazers' bus tried to leave the arena, Mills parked his car in front of it, got out with several friends and challenged the Blazers, The Oregonian newspaper reported. The bus wasn't able to leave until Oakland police arrived to provide an escort. Eventually the NBA suspended Mills for 3 games, Wells for 2 games. Wallace was fined $15,000 for attempting to go into the stands.

Elvin Hayes, know as the "Big E", came up big in the Houston Rockets 132-119 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers as he tallied 44 points and 15 rebounds. Hayes joined the NBA with the San Diego Rockets in 1968 and went on to lead the NBA in scoring with 28.4 points per game, averaged 17.1 rebounds per game, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team. Hayes' scoring average is the fifth best all-time for a rookie, and he remains the last rookie to lead the NBA in scoring average. He scored a career-high 54 points against the Detroit Pistons on November 11, 1968. In Hayes' second season, he led the NBA in rebounding, becoming the first player other than Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain to lead the category since 1957 (Chamberlain was injured during much of the season). In Hayes' third season, 1970–71, he scored a career best 28.7 points per game. In 1971, the Rockets moved to Houston, enabling Hayes to play in the city of his college triumphs. |

Terry Porter records his 6th triple-double as a Portland Trail Blazers in the 112-111 loss to the Sacramento Kings but the game became a side thought when Kings coach Jerry Reynolds collapsed midway thru the 4th quarter. The Kings were ahead by 5 with 5:56 remaining when referee Blaine Reichelt made a loose ball foul call on Kings center Joe Kleine. Reynolds jumped to complain and but instead collapsed on to the floor in front of the Kings bench. Reichelt whistled for a technical foul assuming Reynolds was mocking him but all soon discovered otherwise. The T was later rescinded. The game became secondary as paramedics and other medical personal attended to Reynolds for about 10 minutes before taking him via ambulance to a local hospital. He was released within 48 hours. While a heart attack was initially feared, reports later were exhaustion. |
Reynolds had joined the Kings in 1984 while in Kansas City as an assistant coach. He was interim coach in 1987 when Phil Johnson was released, an assistant under Bill Russell before taking over when he was released. The 1988/89 season was his only full coaching year. Dick Motta would take over from Reynolds midway thru the 1989/90 season. Reynolds moved to the front office for years before becoming the color-man on Kings TV broadcasts.

Dissension reared its ugly head after the Portland Trail Blazers lost to the Chicago Bulls 117-92. After the loss, Sidney Wicks, who had 23 points and 14 rebounds, unloaded on the team in a post-game radio interview with Bill Schonely, calling out his teammates for being unprofessional, mentioning that "Right now, we stink." Wicks went further, claiming the team has "degenerated into a group of individuals tonight and never resembled a team," Wicks continued, "We played like it was just a pickup game in a high school gym. Guys just wandered on and off the court and never gave up the ball. Everybody out there is playing for themselves, and it stinks. Some people are playing team ball; some people aren't. We're out there getting the crap kicked out of us by teams we can play with. There are too many guys dribbling with their heads down and not looking for others." |

Many took the comments as a direct swipe at Geoff Petrie, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and Petrie acknowledged that Wicks made valid points but added Wicks "is just as guilty as anybody else." Petrie also commented that, "Twice he (Wicks) just stood there and shook his head like he should have had the ball. I ran around for six games and never saw the damn ball. Now all of a sudden, he doesn't think he's getting it enough? He is just as guilty as anyone else. We have all chiefs and no Indians. Something has to be done, or we won't win another game all year."

1985
1985 - Clyde Drexler had his 3rd triple-double of his career, and off the bench no less, with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists in the Portland Trail Blazers 125-110 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
The news of the day though is the announced retirement of the original Blazer architect, General Manager Stu Inman. In 1970, Inman was one of several people who started the expansion Portland Trail Blazers NBA franchise, and initially served as chief scout. He first job as scout was to help with the NBA Draft where Inman found the original draft choice of Geoff Petrie. A total of 4 of the draft picks played significant roles during the expansion year.
He also served as interim coach at the end of the 1971–72 season, after Rolland Todd was fired midway through the season. Todd was 12-44 when he was released and Inman went 6-20 to finish the season. While Inman was coaching, he wasn't able to scout as much for the 1972 draft which could explain the selection of LaRue Martin over Bob McAdoo, though in that draft 5 players played for Portland.
Inman played a significant role in the building of Portland Trail Blazers' 1976–77 NBA championship team, with 8 of the 12 players selected by Inman.
Inman is probably best known for being the GM who selected oft-injured Kentucky center Sam Bowie with the number-two selection in the 1984 NBA Draft, one spot ahead of the Chicago Bulls who selected Michael Jordan, as the Blazers already had shooting guards Clyde Drexler and Jim Paxson on the roster and were in need of a center.
Inman served in the front office of the Milwaukee Bucks and the Miami Heat. He later served as an assistant coach at Lake Oswego High School. Inman passed away in 2007 at the age of 80.

1987
Entering the 1987/88 season, only four players remain from the old ABA, two players which play for the Blazers, Maurice Lucas and Caldwell Jones. Moses Malone and Artis Gilmore are the other two players. When the Blazers played the Washington Bullets this evening, it is the last time the Blazers would be on the same floor with Moses Malone. On February 24, 1988, the Blazers would play vs the Boston Celtics and Artis Gilmore, which is the last time 3 ABA players were in a game together. After the 1987/88 season, Lucas and Gilmore retired and Jones signed a contract with the San Antonio Spurs. Malone would move to the Atlanta Hawks for three seasons, three more with Milwaukee Bucks and a single season with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Spurs before retiring in 1995.

1999
In what the NBA determined would be the last game of the 20th century, the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the @sixers 108-90. Due to the Y2K fears, the NBA had no games scheduled on December 31 or January 1. As Portland and Philadelphia were the teams furthest west playing, this game would be considered historic. Enough so that Jumaine Jones jersey is in the Basketball Hall of Fame for he made the last basket in the 20th century.
Jones played for 6 teams in the NBA from 1999 to 2007 before going overseas to play from 2007 until 2016.
