The Portland Trail Blazers waived little used but popular guard Willie McCarter. The move was not a very well received among the players. During warmups prior to the 129-117 loss to the Phoenix Suns, fellow backup guard Charlie Yelverton walked to the top of the foul circle and assumed a sitting yoga position while players continued to warmup. He remained seated even during the National Anthem, while his teammates stood at attention, rising only when the music was done. McCarter played 39 games with Portland and never played in the NBA after this release though he was hired to do some scouting for the team towards the end of the current season. https://hoopshall.com/inductees/willie-mike-mccarter/ |

@RoyTeam records his first - and only - triple double in his short career, scoring 20 points, passing for 11 assists and grabbing 10 rebounds to record the Blazers' first triple double since Damon Stoudamire in April of 2005. @MacBo50 made his first appearance in #Portland after being traded by the @trailblazers during the summer and was roundly booed when he was introduced. Randolph, who spent his first six seasons in Portland, played well with 25 points and 13 rebounds, making 11 of 23 shots. "(The boos) made me play harder," Randolph said. "It was surprising, but it made me play harder."Randolph was traded in the summer of 2007 after becoming the first player in franchise history to lead the Blazers in scoring and rebounding for four consecutive seasons. |

The Portland Trail Blazers dismiss their first coach Rolland Todd and put in Stu Inman as the interim coach.
Todd guided the Blazers to a 29-53 record, the 2nd best expansion record in NBA History. In their 2nd season, Todd has coached the Blazers to a 12-44 record and had lost 9 straight games before the dismissal. There was much dissension on the club, topping off with the protests of some of players for former teammate Willie McCarter just a day before. Todd never returned to the NBA coaching ranks, but it didn’t stop him from continuing his coaching career in other forms. He founded Todd Team Coaching in 1986, which focuses on leadership practices in both the sporting and business worlds.
On the link below, three players (Geoff Petrie, Jim Barnett, Shaler Halimon), the head coach (Rolland Todd) and the broadcaster (Bill Schonely) during the first season of Trail Blazers basketball reminisce about their experiences in Portland.

Jerry West played his last game against Portland, gathering a triple-double as he scored 19 points, passed for 10 assists and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds in the Lakers 124-91 drubbing of the Blazers.
Essentially this is the last game West will play in his NBA career as he only played 5 minutes in his next game, before aggravating a season long groin injury. The injury limited him to 31 games in the regular season. He attempted to play during the playoffs but could only last 14 minutes before having to remove himself from the game. Despite a 20.3 scoring average in the 31 games, he retired . "I'm not willing to sacrifice my standards," West said. "Perhaps I expect too much."
West played 21 games against Portland and scored 424 points for a 20.2 average. He passed for 224 assists for a 10.7 per game and gathered 85 rebounds for an average of 4.1 per game. West was on the winning side in 19 of the 21 games he played vs Portland, with the Lakers winning the first 17 games against the Blazers.
In his 14th and final season, West is the third player in NBA history to reach 25,000 points, following Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson. Playing the guard position, he was voted 12 times into the All-NBA First and Second Teams, was elected into the NBA All-Star Team 14 times. He was chosen as the All-Star MVP in 1972, the same year that he won the only title of his career. West holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series with 46.3. He was also a member of the first five NBA All-Defensive Teams (one second, followed by four firsts), which were introduced when he was 32 years old. Having played in nine NBA Finals, he is also the only player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP despite being on the losing team (1969). West was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and voted as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996.

Sidney Wicks, who scored 24 points in the loss, became the second Blazer to score 5,000 points in his career with Portland. Geoff Petrie was the first player to reach the milestone. This is also the 20th straight game Wicks has scored 20 points or more, a record for an individual Portland player. Wicks would get his streak to 30 games before failing to get 20 points.
Kiki Vandewedghe has the second longest streak when he topped 20 points the last 22 games of the 1986/87 season plus the first 7 games of the 1987 season to get to 29 games over two seasons. If his four playoff games during the 86/87 season are added in, he actually reached 33 games combined.
For active Blazers, Damian Lillard topped 20 points 21 straight games during the 2020/21 season while CJ McCollum has reached 10-straight on two different occasions.
As far as I can fin, the NBA record seems to be 126 games by Wilt Chamberlain, set from game 1 of the 1961/62 season thru the 46th
game of the following season, ending on Jan 20, 1963, when he was ejected after only playing 4 minutes.

Clifford Robinson and Clyde Drexler lead a third-quarter surge as Portland runs its record in the Target Center to 11-0. Like no-nonsense businessmen negotiating a contract, the Trail Blazers got what they came for. In what amounted to a sometimes-tedious, two-hour work session, they hammered out a win-lose deal. They won 112-97, and the woeful Wolves lost for the 34th time in 44 games.

Clyde Drexler was 1 of 9 in the first half but perked up with 11 points in the third quarter. That gave him 16 for the game and made him the 36th player in NBA history with 18,000 points. Drexler, who sat out the final quarter, has scored 18,009 points in 11 1/2 seasons.``That's not bad for a guy who also passes the ball a lot,'' he said. ``But it's just a mark. I don't pay much attention to it. I just play the game. It shows I've been able to stay healthy and contribute. But I put my focus on winning.''
Drexler played 2 more games as a Blazer, finishing as the franchise leader with 18,040 points.

Jerome Kersey records his first - and only - triple-double as a Portland Trail Blazers in the 137-100 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Kersey finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Kersey was selected in the second round of the 1984 NBA draft, the 46th overall pick. He was a regular contributor from the bench in his first three seasons. An injury to Kiki Vandeweghe in 1988 moved Kersey to a starting position. Vandeweghe was traded late in the 1989 season and Kersey was part of the nucleus of a strong Portland team, along with Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, Buck Williams, and Kevin Duckworth that made it to the NBA Finals two out of the next three years (in 1990 and 1992).
On February 18, 2015, Kersey died suddenly at the age of 52. Just days prior to his death, Kersey underwent knee surgery. On the day of his death, he left the Trail Blazers' Rose Quarter office because he was not feeling well. Medical examiners linked his death to a blood clot that traveled to his lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism.

Just a day after scoring a career-high 22 points in a loss to the Lakers, Blazers small forward #AdrianBranch came off the Blazers bench and topped it with 28 points in the victory vs the
@spurs. Branch, a member of the 1987 #Lakers Title winning team, was signed as a FA before the 1988/89 season and had career-highs in Games played, Minutes, Points, Rebounds, and Assists during his only season with Portland. Branch was waived shortly before the start of the 1989/90 season and played 11 games with Minnesota before playin in Australia for the NBL's Geelong Supercats and Brisbane Bullets, as well as in Spain, France, Monaco, Thailand, the Philippines, Israel, Turkey and the Dominican Republic. Former Blazers Legend #CalvinNatt made his 1st and only appearance as a member of the #Spurs, scoring 12 points in 16 mins. |

@trailblazers to their 20th win, and their 1st 3-game winning streak, as they topped the San Francisco @warriors. It is the first time 2 Portland players topped 20 rebounds in the same game. This is Ellis's 5th game over 20 rebounds with the #Blazers and the 15th time he topped the mark in his 9-year @NBA career. He would total 28 games over 20 rebounds in his 14-year career. For Gregor, who added 24 points and 5 assists, the 20 rebounds was a career-high. Gregor missed the #Blazers first 31 games due to a hip injury. Gregor, in his final year of his NBA contract, was the first Portland player to become a Free Agent. According to the rules of the day, if no agreement was met to a future contract, the player could play out his "option year" under the contract he played the previous season, and then be free to negotiate a new deal with another team. Gregor would play the 1971/72 season under this seasons contract. He then signed a FA contract with the @sixers but was traded soon after to the @Bucks. He then was waived after 9 games and jumped to the #ABA #NewYorkNets, where he played until 1974. |

It was on Feb. 6, 1970, when one of Oregon’s most loved — if not the most loved — sports franchises came into existence. The Portland Trail Blazers and Rip City. It all started with Harry Glickman, an entrepreneur of professional sports, having a dream of top-level sports for his hometown of Portland. A group of local investors and the NBA expansion committee met in Philadelphia, and the expansion committee raised the franchise price tag to $3.7 million, causing the group of investors — who were prepared to give $2 million — to back out, leaving no financial support to make it happen.
Back in Portland, Glickman got a call from then-Seattle Sonics general manager Dick Vertlieb, who, according to the team, said he “knew a guy” who might be interested in staking an NBA franchise, but made it clear he was not interested in being part of the ownership. That guy was Herman Sarkowsky, a home builder in Seattle, and the possible interest of two developer friends, Larry Weinberg (who would become owner of the team) and Robert Schmertz.
The league had set a deadline to select its new teams, and when the deadline rolled around, Glickman still hadn’t heard from Sarkowsky. Glickman went to Los Angeles with only a scheme to try and persuade the NBA’s Board of Governors to accept Portland. He had hoped a good faith offer would work. Once inside the hotel room of the chairman of the expansion committee and Baltimore Bullets owner Abe Pollin, the mood changed. A few members of the committee, led by the owner of the New York Knicks, did not want Portland in the league.

Once inside the hotel room of the chairman of the expansion committee and Baltimore Bullets owner Abe Pollin, the mood changed. A few members of the committee, led by the owner of the New York Knicks, did not want Portland in the league.
So Glickman left the room dejected. When he reached the lobby of the hotel, with the feeling that his dream had failed, he remembered he had left his raincoat back in the room. “When I got there,” Glickman said, “Pollin was on the phone: ‘Harry it’s for you … some guy named Sarkowsky is on the phone.’ He had reached Weinberg, who was eager to buy into an NBA franchise and finally got in touch with Schmertz, who was in. And Portland was granted an NBA franchise. |
“When we got this franchise, we didn’t have any support, any political groups … we had very little from the media,” Glickman said Wednesday at a press conference. “I hope that changes now, because of the very day we got this franchise, we held a press conference the very next day saying, ‘we hope we (as in Oregon) have another major league team.’ And my biggest disappointment is, we haven’t had another one to join us. I hope we don’t have to wait another 48 years to get one.”

During a timeout with 3:33 to play in the third quarter and Portland leading 79-52, Vernon Maxwell came to the bench with his teammates for the timeout. Maxwell sat down, then charged at least a dozen rows into the stands and punched Blazer fan SteveGeorge in the jaw. A freelance photographer captured the blow on videotape.
Maxwell went a dozen rows into the stands and punched spectator Steve George, who had been heckling him, breaking his jaw. George said the section of fans behind the basket nearest the Houston bench had been heckling Maxwell all night. Maxwell, along with Robert Horry and Larry Smith [Rockets assistant coach], who also entered the stands, were ejected from the game. Maxwell later filed suit against George and his brother Nick George, claiming they had slandered him by accusing him of assault. George then filed a $4.5 million suit against Maxwell and the Rockets.
The NBA suspended Maxwell for 10 games without pay and fined him $20,000.

Michael Ray Richardson scored another triple-double with 14 points, 14 rebounds, and 15 assists but it wasn't enough as the Blazers pulled out a 100-98 victory over the New York Knicks, thanks to the play of Mike Harper and a free throw by Blazer center Petur Gudmondsson with 4 seconds remaining Gudmondsson, the only Icelandic player to play in the NBA, was a 7'-2" center that the Blazers drafted in the 3rd round of the 1981 Draft from the University of Washington. Gudmondsson played 68 games for the Trail Blazers during the 1981–82 season. On 19 March 1982, he scored a season high 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a victory against the Utah Jazz. He was waived prior to the next season and played in Iceland and England before playing 8 games for the Lakers in 1985/86 and 74 games with the San Antonio Spurs from 1987 to 1989. Harper, the only player from North Park Univ. to play in the NBA, led the @VikingsNPU to three consecutive championship (1978, 79, 80). The Blazers drafted Harper in the 3rd round of the 1980 draft and he played 2 seasons with Portland, averaging 5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 123 games, before going overseas to play in Italy, France and Spain. Harper retired in 1988 and became an insurance agent and currently serves as a board member for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. Richardson, nicknamed "Sugar Ray", would record 18 triple-doubles in his 4 years with the Knicks but is much more known for his drug issues throughout the 80's. Between the 1981/82 season and the 1985/86, Richardson was traded 3 times and would have 3 separate instances with the NBA drug policy before being banned for life by NBA commissioner David Stern on February 25, 1986. He regained the right to play in the NBA in 1988 if he remained clean, but decided to continue his career in Europe. He never played in the NBA again, despite being reinstated. |

In the middle of his postgame interview with reporters Monday night, Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan was dissecting another marvelous game by LaMarcus Aldridge and a superb all-around performance from Andre Miller when someone asked why he used a six-man rotation. "That was nine," McMillan said, flatly. "(Luke) Babbitt played three minutes. And (Sean) Marks played a great four minutes." Laughter erupted. Indeed, it was all smiles Monday night at the Rose Garden after the Trail Blazers recorded one of their most impressive victories of the season, 109-103 over the Chicago Bulls, before a sellout crowd of 20,534.
Aldridge was dominant from beginning to end, finishing with a career-high 42 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Aldridge, who had 40 points the Blazers last game at the Rose Garden --a win over the San Antonio Spurs --became the first Blazers player to score 40 points in back-to-back home games since Clyde Drexler did so in April 1989. If he wasn't collecting alley-oop lobs for dunks, he was abusing Carlos Boozer and the rugged Bulls' frontline with a variety of post moves. And he was clutch when it mattered most. He scored 11 consecutive Blazers points during a crucial fourth-quarter stretch and had 13 of their final 18 points of the game, helping the Blazers ice the impressive victory.
When Aldridge stepped to the free line with 4.8 seconds remaining, he not only had a chance to seal the victory but to set his new career high. After he drained the first attempt, Miller waived his arms up and down over and over, urging an already raucous Rose Garden crowd to go nuts.

Bill Walton and the Blazers race to playoff position has been halted. The Blazers were 14-26 less than a month ago, entered tonight’s game winners of 9 of their last 10 games to get to 23-28. The Blazers moved into the playoff picture as well, positioning in 3rd place in the Pacific Division and as the 4th best team in the West. The playoff structure of the time had 5 teams in each conference making the playoffs. Walton would miss the next 17 games and the Blazers had fallen to the bottom of the Pacific Division.

Clyde Drexler started his 1st All-Star game and came tantalizing close to being named the games MVP, losing to Magic Johnson. Drexler, Portland's most decorated All-Star, played in eight All-Star games and was voted a starter in 1992, 1993 and 1994.
Drexler sank 10 of 15 shots from the field and collected 22 points, a team-high nine rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots in 28 minutes. With the game out of hand in the second half, the MVP race came down to Drexler and Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers. In the game, Johnson, who had just come out of brief retirement after contracting HIV, took home the MVP with 25 points and nine assists. Drexler showed little animosity towards the Lakers' star. "It didn't bother me at all,'' Drexler told The Oregonian when asked if he felt he should have won the MVP after the game. "My sentiments were with Magic. I just enjoyed being on the same court with him."

Zach Randolph scored 40 points and Jarrett Jack added 12 of his 20 points in overtime to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 108-100 win over the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday night. After hitting one of two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to send the Blazers to their second straight overtime game and their fifth in nine games, Randolph scored the first four points of OT to give Portland the lead for good as it snapped a three-game losing streak.
Randolph carried Portland, scoring 30 or more points for the second straight game and the 13th time this season as Charlotte tried four different defenders on him. He made 13 of 27 shots, 13 of 15 free throws and grabbed nine rebounds and missed his career high by two points. Gerald Wallace had 30 points and 15 rebounds for Charlotte, and Emeka Okafor added 23 points and 10 rebounds, but fouled out early in overtime trying to guard Randolph, as the Bobcats lost their third straight.

Damian Lillard scored 22 of his season-high 50 points in the third quarter, and Portland beat Sacramento 118-100. Lillard, from Weber State, scored at will, making 16 of 26 shots — including eight 3-pointers — and all 10 of his free-throw attempts. He reached the half-century mark by the end of the third period and sat the entire fourth. |
Lillard, who also had six assists, joined teammate CJ McCollum and Houston's James Harden as the only players to score 50 points through three quarters this season. Nine days ago teammate CJ McCollum dropped 50 of his own -- also in three quarters of work -- against the Chicago Bulls. It's the first time in franchise history two Portland Trail Blazers teammates have recorded 50-point games in the same season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm-1tjG5uIE |

Carmelo Anthony moved past another legend on the NBA’s all-time leading scorers’ list, surpassing Oscar Robertson today to move into 12th All-Time position while scoring 23 points during a 106-97 win over Orlando at the Moda Center. Robertson joins Tim Duncan and Dominique Wilkins as those eclipsed by Anthony so far this season. |
Anthony’s 23 points gave him 26,722 for his career. He passed Robertson (26,710) on a fadeaway, baseline jumper early in the fourth quarter. The moment came early in the fourth quarter when he hit an 11-foot fadeaway jumper from the right baseline.
Fouled on the play, Anthony made the free throw to give the Blazers an 87-76 lead with 11:02 remaining in the game. Anthony then proceeded to make two three-pointers within the next two minutes and followed up with two free throws. He finished with 13 in the quarter. On the night, Anthony made 7 of 16 shots, including 5 of 9 threes. He also had three rebounds and three blocked shots. When asked if there was a name on the scorers’ list that meant the most for him to have surpassed or to still chase down, Anthony responded: “Whoever is next. Two more to crack that top 10. That makes it fun.” |

That moves the team out of the playoff picture and into the running for Bill Walton.

PORTLAND -- The NBA All-Star is in two days so every team will get some rest and the injured Blazers could sure use some as they lost for the third straight game in the friendly confines of the Memorial Coliseum, 117-109 to the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks forward John Drew scored 40 points in the win, giving the lowly Atlanta team a 3-1 advantage against the Blazers for the season. “Drew was absolutely unbelievable in the second half,” said Hawk coach Hubie Brown. “But give Armond Hill a lot of the credit. He made some great passes.” While Drew was scoring at will, Hill was dishing 15 assists forcing the Blazers to chase the rookie point guard from Princeton Univ. “Hill was beating their (Blazers) guards off the dribble early in the game,” said Brown.
The Hawks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead as Ken Charles made the first two shots attempted and the Blazers never recovered, though they never trailed by more than nine points in the first half. The Blazers only trailed 61-55 at the half as rookie Wally Walker scored 12 points to keep the game close. With Portland only trailing by a basket in the opening minutes of the third quarter and appeared about to make a move before Drew caught fire, hitting 12 of 15 shots in second half, a majority on jumpers within 10 feet from the basket. “Nobody was able to stop Drew from getting the ball,” said Blazer coach Jack Ramsey. The Blazers, at one time or another, had Larry Steele, Bob Gross, Walker and eventually Maurice Lucas trying to contain Drew.

In addition to his 15 assists, Hill scored 15 points as did Charles. Former Blazer Steve Hawes scored 14 points and gathered eight rebounds before fouling out.
Lucas hit on 17 of 26 to score a career high 41 points in the loss. Lionel Hollins scored 16 points and Walker finished with 15 points. The loss dropped the Blazers to a full game behind the Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division heading into the break. Bill Walton again sat due to his inflamed Achilles tendon in his right leg. Lloyd Neal was moved to the Injured List and must miss five games. The Blazers officially signed Clyde Mayes, who played three minutes. The home loss, the third straight, is the longest home losing streak since the Blazers lost four in a row last season, December 14 to December 21, 1975.
The 11,707 in attendance is the last time that the Blazers will have under 12,000 people at the Memorial Coliseum

Portland Trail Blazers rookie #GeoffPetrie scored 43 points in the #Blazers victory vs The Seattle SuperSonics. It is the second time Petrie topped the 40 mark in his rookie season, both times were against the Seattle Supersonics. He would score 46 vs these same #Sonics on March 19, 1971. The win is the Blazers 5th straight victory, the longest of any of the expansion clubs. The Blazers would tie this streak as they finished the season winning their last 5 games as well. #GaryGregor tied his career-high of 28 points in the win, one point shy of his career-high. Gregor pulled down 10 rebounds with #LeRoyEllis matching the rebounds. |
For the #Sonics, #LeeWinfield came off the bench to score 23 points while rookie #PeteCross grabbed 19 rebounds. It is the 11th time Cross has grabbed 19 boards or more in his first 60 games. His career-high 25 rebounds was set vs the Blazers on Jan 1, the same game Petrie first topped the 40 point mark.

Rick Roberson scored a career-high 37 pts in @trailblazers 113-104 victory over @Suns. Roberson missed only 1 shot from the field, hit 13 of 16 free throws and grabbed 10 rebounds. Roberson was selected in the first round of the 1969 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA and the New York Nets of the ABA, ultimately choosing the NBA. With Wilt Chamberlain limited to 12 games due to a knee injury, Roberson helped shore up the Lakers' front line and he saw significant playing time. In 74 games he averaged 8.7 points and 9.1 rebounds. Playing alongside future Hall-of-Fame players Jerry West and Elgin Baylor, Roberson helped the Lakers win the 1969–70 NBA Western Division with a 46-36 record and advance to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the New York Knicks in seven games.
With Chamberlain returning the next season, Roberson saw a decline in playing time before being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played 2 years in Cleveland before joining Portland, with John Johnson, prior to the 1973/74 season. In 69 games with Portland, he averaged a career-high 13.5 points and added 10.2 rebounds. Roberson was traded prior to the 1974/75 season to the New Orleans/ Utah Jazz. He retired in 1976 after 7 seasons in the NBA, with career averages of 9 points and 8.3 rebounds in 423 games

The following articles from June 4th, 6th, and 11th of 1980 show that the Blazers lost the NBA All-Star game they were rewarded with in 1977. The 1981 game that was slated for Buffalo was canceled after the Braves moved to San Diego and given to Los Angeles, with New York getting the 1982 game that was originally for Cleveland. The Blazers plan to bid for the 1983 game.
A week after the switching of games, a Cleveland lawyer sued the NBA on behalf of the Cavaliers to ensure the city retained the 1981 game. I could not find any information after this date regarding Portland getting or bidding on a game.
The 1981 game was played in Cleveland, with the 1982 game being played in East Rutherford New Jersey. The 1983 game was played in Los Angeles and is best know for singer Marvin Gaye's rendition of the National Anthem. To date, even with the lack of hotel rooms, Portland still has not hosted an NBA All-Star game despite hosting 6 NBA Western Conference Finals (1990, 1991, 1992, 1999, 2000, 2019), 2 NBA Finals (1990 and 92), and the Tournament of the Americas in 1992. |

The Portland Trail Blazers scored 143 points against the Denver Nuggets but the Nuggets scored 162 points for the victory. The total eclipsed the previous high of 160 points against the Blazers set by the Phoenix Suns in 1972.
David Thompson led the Nuggets with 30 points with Kiki Vandeweghe adding 23. Kenny Higgs tied his career-high with 21 points and Alex English added 20. Calvin Natt led Portland with 25 points and Billy Ray Bates scored 23 points and passed for a career-high 10 assists. Kelvin Ransey passed for 14 assist, a career-high at the time. He would eventually pass for 17 assists as a member of the New Jersey Nets.
Ransey, the 4th pick in the 1980 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls for the Blazers in a pre-arranged trade. The Blazers drafted Ronnie Lester for the Bulls. The teams traded draft picks too. Ransey missed being the Rookie-of-the-Year by 1 vote, losing out to Darrell Griffith. Ransey played 2 years with Portland, averaging 15.6 points and 7 assists, before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks for Wayne Cooper and a 1st round draft pick in 1985. That pick yielded Terry Porter.

The career of Larry Bird is full of impressive accomplishments: Back-to-back-to-back NBA MVP awards from 1984 to 1986, three NBA championships, two NBA Finals MVP awards, 12 NBA-All Star appearances, NBA Coach of the Year in 1998, and NBA Executive of the Year in 2012.
However, despite all of these accolades, one of Bird's most impressive performances came on a quiet, Friday night against the Portland Trail Blazers on Feb. 14, 1986. Two nights before a matchup with the rival Los Angeles Lakers, Bird decided to play with his off, left hand for the majority of the game against the Blazers. His reason why? "I'm saving my right hand for the Lakers."

In a blockbuster trade designed to put the Rockets on course for a repeat title, Houston acquired Drexler and Tracy Murray on Tuesday in exchange for power forward Otis Thorpe. "This is a dream come true," Drexler said. "When I told my mother, she was so ecstatic she started to cry. "I'm just going to come in and blend my talents with the talent that's already here. The Dream is the best in the game. All he needs is a little help and we can win another championship." Olajuwon was almost giddy after hearing that he is being reunited with Drexler. "It's too good to be true," Olajuwon said. "I can't believe it. Now, our team is going to be different. We'll have more speed. Clyde is a natural athlete who creates so many opportunities." |
The Blazers will get a conditional draft pick from Houston, which will be determined prior to the 1995 draft. The Blazers also get the rights to 1993 second-round draft pick Marcelo Nicola. "This is an exciting day for the Rockets and for the city of Houston," Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said. "We are dedicated in our quest to win another NBA championship and believe this will give us the opportunity. Clyde is a great competitor, one of the greatest players of all time and a future Hall of Famer."
The Rockets wanted to give their 1993-94 title team every opportunity to repeat. But it had become obvious to the Rockets' coaches after a slip-and-slide first half that something would have to be done if the Rockets were going to make another charge toward a title. The key was that the Rockets managed to reel in Drexler without giving up Robert Horry, the man most coveted by the Blazers. The Rockets lose a big body and a consistent scorer and rebounder in Thorpe. But Houston was 9-2 this year when Carl Herrera started in Thorpe's place at power forward. With Drexler, the Rockets have the legitimate No. 2 scoring weapon they have coveted for so long. They tried to trade Horry for Sean Elliott last year, but the deal was aborted. Now, the Rockets have a 20-point weapon other than Olajuwon and still retain Horry, who has major upside potential. |
Tuesday's trade is pending the three players' passing their physicals, which all are expected to do today. "Whenever you make a trade, it's going to be tough," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "I wanted to keep this team together and give them a chance to do it again. "It's tough when you build a family. Otis was a big part of our championship. Sometimes, it isn't fair. But I have to give my strongest loyalty to the good of the Rockets. We felt this was a deal that could make us better."
While improvement on the court was the major consideration, Drexler's huge popularity in Houston will be an added bonus that could propel interest in Rockets basketball to new heights. Many longtime Houston basketball fans never forgave the Rockets for bypassing Drexler with the No. 3 pick in the 1983 draft. Drexler wound up being only the No. 14 pick, but worked on his jumper and ultimately became runner-up to Michael Jordan for MVP honors in 1992. After an injury-plagued last two years, Drexler, 33, had come back strong this year. He was averaging 22.0 points and 5.1 assists when he got the news he was headed home. In Murray, the Rockets are getting an outstanding perimeter shooter. He could be especially effective as a spot-up threat in Houston's inside-outside attack. Houston had considered taking Murray in the 1992 draft, but couldn't pass up Horry with the No. 11 selection. Tomjanovich's lineup possibilities are certainly intriging now, with the addition of Drexler and Murray. When everybody is healthy and available, Tomjanovich will have to determine how to fit two of the better off-guards in the league - Drexler and Vernon Maxwell - into his rotation. If Drexler starts, will Maxwell balk at coming off the bench? Tomjanovich indicated there could be a possibility of Maxwell spending considerable time at point guard.
"Those are good problems to have," Tomjanovich said. "I could see situations where Clyde and Max are together in the backcourt or Clyde is at small forward with Vernon at big guard. We've got a lot of possibilities now." Drexler will make about $8.75 million next season and it is expected the Blazers will pick up most of that tab. Drexler becomes an unrestricted free agent after the 1995-96 season. Thorpe attended Tuesday's shoot-around, but got the news of the trade via telephone well before reporting for the Rockets-Clippers game. "Otis was classy and professional," Tomjanovich said. "I would have rather done it face-to-face, but it was a situation where the only way was to call him at home." Thorpe was averaging 13.3 points and 8.9 rebounds this season. The 11-year veteran had been plagued by nagging injuries which caused him to miss 11 games this season.
Now, it's the Hakeem and Clyde show. The Rockets figure it's going to be a star-studded production.

UPDATE
The Rockets didn't exactly take off after the trade for Clyde Drexler in 1995. As the team adjusted to a new makeup, it went 17-18 the rest of the season and finished as the No. 6 seed in the West. But the postseason was a different story. In the opening series against the Utah Jazz, Drexler averaged 25.2 points per game, including 41 and 31 in the final two games of the series as the Rockets came back from a 2-1 deficit to win the best-of-five. |
Against the Suns in the next round, it was Mario Elie's "Kiss of Death" three-pointer that most remember, but Drexler had 29 in that deciding Game 7 to reach the Western Conference finals. After Hakeem Olajuwon took care of the Spurs in that round, the Rockets were back in the NBA Finals. In Game 1 against the Magic, the Rockets had rallied from a 20-point deficit and forced overtime on a Kenny Smith 3-pointer. As time wound down, Drexler went for the winning shot on one of his trademark finger rolls. He missed but his old UH friend Olajuwon was there to tip it in for the win.

Kevin Durant topped Damian Lillard individually Wednesday, but it was the Portland Trail Blazers beating the Golden State Warriors that won the day. The 123-117 loss sunk the Warriors to the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, which hasn’t happened this late in the season since Golden State’s emergence in 2014.
Durant finished the game with 50 points, his first time scoring 50 in Golden State and the fifth time in his career. In fact, Durant had previously only scored 40 points twice since joining the Warriors. His last 50-point game was a 51-point outing against the Toronto Raptors in 2014. To reach 50 on Wednesday, Durant rattled off back-to-back four-point plays at one point.

Bill Walton returned to Portland for the first time since leaving the Portland Trail Blazers in 1979 falling to his former team as he Blazers put together a 115-106 victory over the San Diego / L.A. Clippers. Walton finished the game with 15 points and 9 rebounds in 35 minutes. Joining Walton on the Clippers were former Blazers Lionel Hollins and Bob Gross. Gross, signed by the Clippers just the day before as a Free Agent, did not play while Hollins scored 13 points and passed for 5 assists before fouling out.

For the 160th time in his career, and the 9th time since 1970, #WiltChamberlain topped the 30 rebound mark as he pulled down 31 boards in the @Lakers victory over the @trailblazers. As one of the then-record crowd of 11,918 cheering on the home team, the #Blazers came the closest they had have ever come to defeating the #LosAngelesLakers, but again fell short for the 15th straight time, 110-103. #GailGoodrich led the #Lakers with 46 points.
@GeoffPetrie, who missed a 22-foot shot that would have given the Blazers a 96-95 lead with 2 minutes remaining, led Portland with 27 points. #LloydNeal, the 6'-7" rookie center for the Blazers who yielded 6 inches to the 7'3" Chamberlain, recorded his only 20/20 game of his career as he finished with 20 points and 22 rebounds. #SidneyWicks added 21 points and 12 rebounds.

For #WiltChamberlain, who passed the 30K career point mark yesterday, it was his 78th and final triple-double of his career. #Chamberlain added 17 points and 11 assists to his 31 rebounds. For good measure, he added 6 blocked shots. #GailGoodrich connected on 19 FGM, many from outlet passes from Chamberlain, on his way to a season-high 46 points, one point shy of his then career-high 47. Goodrich also grabbed 11 rebounds, again one short of his career-high 12.
When Goodrich played for @UCLAMBB, he set his college high of 42 points at this same #MemorialColiseum when @UCLA defeated the @umichbball in the 1965 @NCAA Title game. |

#BobMcAdoo scores 42 points and grabs 12 rebounds in the #BuffaloBraves victory vs @trailblazers. Big Mac connected on half of his 30 FGA and 12 of his 15 FTA and nearly had a triple-double as he passed for 9 assists in the win. The reigning @NBA #MVP, while never getting a triple-double in his 14 year career, has had 3 games in the last month with 9 assists along with his 14 double-doubles he has amassed in the last month. Blazers coach #LennyWilkens was unhappy with the referees during the games final minutes as he felt the calls definitely went the way of the #BuffaloBaves. Two late foul calls on #LarrySteele and #LloydNeal allowed McAdoo to score 5 points to cut the #Blazers 6-point advantage to 1. https://x.com/77Blazers/status/1758891154505159146?s=20 |

Portland's leading man showcased his clutch credentials with 43 points, including a go-ahead three-point play with 16.5 seconds left, to lift the Trail Blazers to their sixth consecutive victory, 126-124 over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night. 1971 - Rip City! is born
Within the context of the basketball world, Portland is commonly referred to as “Rip City”. Many longtime Trail Blazer fans know the origin of the term, but the younger fans, the newer fans, and the fans of other teams may not be aware of the history. For those who are unaware and those who would like a refresher, here is how Portland became “Rip City”.
Legend has it that on this day, Blazer announcer Bill Schonely used the phrase “Rip City” for the first time. Schonely said he had been trying to come up with a phrase that would “help my broadcast, as well as be synonymous with the team. I couldn’t figure it out." On February 18th, 1971, the Los Angeles Lakers came to town and the two teams faced off in the Memorial Coliseum for the fourth time that inaugural season. “The Lakers ... Wilt Chamberlin, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor … the place (Memorial Coliseum) was packed," said Schonely.
It seemed that the Lakers would win handily, as expected, until the Trail Blazers made a significant push in the second half. "The Blazers were down by 25-26 points," Schonely recalled, before bringing the game to within two points. "All of a sudden as the game went on, the scene changed and the next basket by Portland would tie the mighty Lakers." It is at this point that the legend grows.
Jim Barnett, a 20-point scorer for the Blazers at the time, brought the ball up the sideline. The wiry guard was so in the groove that he decided to let it fly from just a few steps past the mid-court line, much to the chagrin of Schonely. “Jimmy stopped in front of me, turned to me, gave me a wink, spun around and then turned around and just threw it towards the basket for no particular reason,” Schonely said. “So, I followed the ball in the air and when it went through the netting, I came out — and why I’ll never know — ‘Rip City, alright!’ The Lakers call for a timeout, I give my commercial cue, I sit back in my chair, and the guys to my left and the guys to my right said, ‘Rip City?’ I said Yeah! They said ‘Leave that in.’ And that was the birth of Rip City.”

They said ‘Leave that in.’ And that was the birth of Rip City.”
Barnett commented a few years ago, “He was incredulous that I was going to shoot. He thought it was a bad decision, you could hear that in the intonation of his voice.” Barnett, the Warriors’ television analyst since from the 1985/86 season until the 2018/19 season. “It was such a long shot, I did the Steph Curry thing: I turned around … and I just waited to hear the crowd roar. And that’s what I heard. I had no idea (Schonely) said, ‘Rip City.’ But that was the shot." The Trail Blazers would eventually lose 136-114, but that moment within the game lives in history. It is important to remember that although the ABA introduced the three-point field goal in the 1970s, it was not adopted by the NBA until the 1979-80 season. Barnett’s heave was considered more of a circus shot at the time, an attempt for electrifying the crowd. |
Schonely, the creator of other beloved Blazers expressions like “Bingo Bango Bongo”, and “You’ve got to make your free throws” does not know how he came up with the term “Rip City”. Now 90, Schonely reflects back on the effect it had on Oregon sports. “Rip City” has become more than a nickname, but a rallying cry for Portland. It graces the jerseys, the merchandise, and the lips of the fans.

Those two words mean basketball to any Blazer fan who ever heard any of the 2,522 broadcasts that Schonely did from the very first one through the 1998 NBA playoffs when he retired.. “It has grown and grown and grown and now the company is called Rip City Inc., and it’s known worldwide,” Schonely said. “I’m flabbergasted by the entire thing.”
Those of you who watched or attended games in Portland during the 2018/19 playoff run to the Western Conference Finals may recall the thunderous chant “WE ARE . . . RIP CITY!” from the crowd. Without Schonely, we would not be.
Update... Throughout my research, this game keeps coming up as the game for Rip City. If you read the game report though, the Blazers never tied the score but were consistently behind all game. There is no mention of a come-back per se, though the Blazers cut the lead to 13 in the fourth quarter.
The best guess that I have for the actual game would have been the first meeting in Portland on November 3, 1970. The Blazers actually led after the first quarter so there's a chance that the Blazers tied up the Lakers at some pointing that game, but all parties refer to this game as the center of Rip City and so shall it stay here

The @trailblazers had the @nyknicks on the ropes and were about to win their 1st game ever in famed @TheGarden but @NBA referee #BobRakal got in the way. Leading 106-104 with :28 seconds remaining after #SidneyWicks made 2 FTA, the #Knicks had the ball with @RealEarlMonroe working to get a shot off vs #Blazers #LarrySteele when Rakal blew his whistle, thinking the Knicks had committed a 24-second violation. When the whistle blew, Steele reacted as if he had been called for a foul and turned away from Monroe, who then casually tossed up a shot along the baseline, which went in. Rakal initially waived off the basket. After Rakal realized his mistake regarding the 24-second violation, he allowed the basket, which tied the game at 106-106. "I admit my erroring in blowing the whistle," Rakal tried to explain later, "but I had to count the goal because I was positive the ball was gone before I blew my whistle. I can't make two errors by disallowing the goal." The Blazers VP #HarryGlickman said he will file a protest with the league office, adding, "The guys played their hearts out. They beat the Knicks and got jobbed." |

Damian Lillard tops 50 points for the 1st in his career, dropping 51 points in a 137-105 victory against the Golden State Warriors. Draymond Green came within a turnover of recording the fifth quadruple-double in NBA history.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Damian Lillard came through with the best game of his career against his hometown team. Lillard scored a career-high 51 points, and had seven assists, six steals and no turnovers to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a stunningly dominant 137-105 win over the defending champion Golden State Warriors on Friday night. "It's a great feeling," said Lillard, who is from Oakland, California. "Especially against the best team in the league. I haven't scored 50 since ninth grade."
Golden State coach Steve Kerr paid Lillard the ultimate compliment for today's point guard. "He was phenomenal," Kerr said. "He looked like Steph Curry out there." Curry, last season's MVP, led the Warriors with 31 points and five assists. Draymond Green added 14 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, but also had nine turnovers as Golden State snapped its 11-game winning streak and saw its quest for the best regular season record in NBA history hit a serious speed bump. "This is the NBA, so there's going to be nights where the other team gets hot," Kerr said. "I'm OK with the other team making shots. What I'm not OK with is losing our poise in the third quarter."

The 137 points were the most by a Golden State opponent this season, and the 32-point margin of defeat the Warriors' most lopsided loss. "We weren't as focused as we should be," said the Warriors' Klay Thompson, who had 23 points. Said Curry: "We just lost our composure when it comes to how we controlled our possessions. That usually doesn't happen." Lost in the eye-popping offensive performance by Lillard and the Blazers was a stifling defensive effort throughout the game, but especially in the third quarter when they forced Golden State into 13 of its 20 turnovers. "I couldn't be more happy with our effort defensively," Lillard said. "I think that's what allowed us to get out and play at a fast pace and move the ball the way we did tonight."
Portland had 28 assists on 52 field goals against only 13 turnovers as the Blazers played a more up-tempo game than fans are used to seeing. Meanwhile the Warriors must regroup as they try to better the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, who hold the record for wins in a season with 72. Lillard became the first player in NBA history to have at least 50 points, seven assists and six steals since the steal became an official statistic in 1973-74, according to information provided by the Trail Blazers from the Elias Sports Bureau.
"Dame had it going early and had it going late," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "At the end it was just ridiculous." Lillard was also the first player since Reggie Miller in 1992 to have 50 points and seven assists without any turnovers. He tied a franchise record and set a Warriors' opposition record with nine 3-pointers.

After months of controversy regarding his starting position being usurped by the play of Jerome Kersey, the Blazers traded Kiki Vandeweghe to the New York Knicks. ''I found out about it on the bus going to practice,'' Vandeweghe said through a Knicks spokesman. ''I was excited. I wanted to go where I was wanted and to be part of what the Knicks are building in New York.''
Unhappy in Portland and eager to join the Knicks, Vandeweghe, who reportedly earns just over $1 million a year, paved the way for a trade by agreeing to accept deferment of part of his salary so he could fit into the Knicks' salary structure. Because of a league-imposed limit, the team can pay a new player no more than $718,00 a year. ''We are all ecstatic,'' said the Knicks' coach, Rick Pitino, after last night's 139-114 victory over the Charlotte Hornets. He pointed out that Vandeweghe has made 53 percent of his field-goal attempts in his career and 86 percent of his free throws. But he warned that it might be a while before Vandeweghe could master the team's complicated defense.
The trade came a day after the Trail Blazers ordered Vandeweghe to rejoin the team for a game against the Pistons and announced that he was no longer available for a trade with the Knicks, who had all but sewn up an agreement with Portland last week. The Blazers' management was angry that Vandeweghe had turned down a three-way deal that would have sent him to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for a draft choice from the Atlanta Hawks.
Vandeweghe had been staying with his family in Los Angeles since the All-Star Game break, nursing his ailing back and waiting for a trade that had appeared imminent. He played 19 minutes and scored 2 points in the 105-94 loss to the Pistons on Wednesday night.

Clyde Drexler returned after a three-game absence due to a broken nose and proved once and for all that a triple-double isn't always an adequate measuring stick for basketball excellence. Drexler had 18 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds -- and 20 missed shots in 26 attempts. Nearly half of the misses came on shots so difficult he couldn't have made them if the basket was the size of a bathtub.

``To come back against the best team in the league is difficult,'' Drexler said. ``You try to do too much, too fast. I rushed everything. But at least I got my game shape back.'' The loss was the Blazers' sixth in a row and fourth straight for Adelman since taking over for Mike Schuler. In Adelman's prevous losses, though, the team played hard in defeat. ``The most disturbing thing tonight is what happened after we made our run in the third quarter,'' Adelman said. ``They responded with two or three baskets and we just said, `Here we go again' and they just killed us. We have to respond better than that.'' |

AP - The Portland Trail Blazers and the Chicago Bulls met today with Michael Jordan dropping 52 points against the Blazers but Portland came away with a 104-96 victory thanks to Clyde Drexler, who finished with 42 points, five rebounds, eight assists and nine steals. How good was Jordan that year? He won MVP and Defensive Player of the Year while leading the NBA in points and steals and was named Player of the Month three times. Drexler was a second team All-NBA selection in 1987-88 and finished fifth in the MVP voting.
It was a virtuoso performance marred only by the final stanza. Michael Jordan`s 52 points weren`t enough as the Bulls fell to the Portland Trail Blazers 104-96 Friday night at the Stadium. Jordan`s output equaled his season high, which is also the league`s best. Clyde Drexler led Portland with 42 points, and ex-Thornridge High School star Kevin Duckworth added 27. The loss, before a sellout crowd of 17,744, dropped the Bulls to 31-23. Jordan was at his best. He tied the score at 93 with 5:26 left with a stunning dispy-do move around and through four Blazers.

One long graceful step in flight, a soft hang-time push shot, and Jordan evened things out. It was Brian Boitano in sneakers. But the Bulls` offense stalled near the end, and baskets by Terry Porter and Drexler gave Portland a 97-93 lead with 2:34 to go. A 24-second violation, a Jordan miss and a traveling call on Charles Oakley gave Portland a chance to close the Bulls out. Duckworth`s free throw made it 98-93, and finally Jordan hit a jumper with 53 seconds left.
The Blazers patiently worked it around to Jerome Kersey, whose wide-open 18-footer made it 100-95 with 38 seconds to go. Eight seconds later, Jordan`s free throws cut Portland`s lead to 4. But two free throws by Duckworth cinched it. John Paxson sat out the game because his dislocated right thumb prevented him from shooting. It was the first game Paxson has missed all season. Newly acquired point guard Sam Vincent made his Chicago debut with 4:54 left in the first quarter and the Bulls trailing 18-15. The 6-foot-2-inch ex-Michigan State star was acquired Thursday night from the Seattle SuperSonics for Sedale Threatt. He told Bulls operations chief Jerry Krause he would be on the first plane out. He arrived Friday, passed his physical and looked ready to contribute.
It seems like there is nothing like a little healthy competition to make nagging injuries feel suddenly better. Vincent shows up and Rory Sparrow`s sprained right wrist, which has been bothering him for more than a week, didn`t appear as serious. Sparrow looked lively in the warmups, and he hit his first jumper. Not enough jumpers fell for the Bulls in the first quarter. Jordan had 12 points and was pulling his load, but the Bulls were getting burned by their turnovers and Portland`s steals. The Blazers went on a 14-2 run in the latter part of the quarter and led 32-19. Igniting the burst was Drexler, who stole the ball four times from Jordan and often wound up with dunks. He and Kersey and Duckworth put on a dunk show as the Blazers seized a 34-21 lead after one quarter.

Drexler had 16 points on 8 for 11 shooting, plus 4 steals and 3 assists. Jordan had 5 turnovers, getting picked cleanly by Drexler. The Blazers had 6 steals in the first quarter while the Bulls committed 9 turnovers. Portland started the second quarter with an 8-2 run, and it was 42-25 before the Bulls could figure out what hit them. The Blazers were ripping apart the league`s top defense. The Bulls came into Friday`s game with an average yield of 99.8 points. They topped the league in defensive rebounding and fewest turnovers, the primary components responsible for their defensive standing. Jordan skipped his usual break and played right through until 7:54 remained in the half. Even his presence couldn`t cool the Blazers. Behind an effective fast break, Portland built a 50-32 lead midway through the quarter. That was when the home team finally showed a little life. Jordan`s five points led an 11-2 run and reduced the deficit to 52-43. The Bulls wound up trailing 58-47 at halftime.
Jordan had 25 points by then. Drexler had 22, Duckworth and Kersey 12 each. Sparrow added 9 for the Bulls. Oakley, the league`s leading rebounder, had only 2 in the first half, an indication that Portland`s fast-moving, finesse-style attack wasn`t giving the Bulls` power forward a chance to muscle inside. The Bulls were hot from the floor in the first half, shooting 60.6 percent. Normally, they would be well ahead with a statistic like that. However, they committed 16 turnovers, 6 by Jordan, and Portland shot 55.8 percent with only 4 turnovers. Jordan missed only one shot in the half in 11 attempts.
The Stadium grew silent early in the third quarter when Jordan went down after banging his left knee into Drexler`s knee. Grimacing in pain as trainer Mark Pfeil worked on the knee, Jordan eventually walked off on his own power. He had scored the first 4 points of the quarter before going down. After a brief rest, Jordan came back and the fans unleashed a collective sigh of relief. His first play back, he drove the baseline and scored. An Oakley basket and two free throws left the Bulls trailing 65-57 with 8:11 left in the quarter. A Mike Brown basket brought them within 6. Twice more, the Bulls came within 6. Jordan`s rebound layup gave him 33 points with 5:21 left in the quarter. Drexler was almost as good with 28. Scottie Pippen, looking totally out of sync, was yanked by coach Doug Collins. Duckworth inside and Drexler outside gave the Blazers a 10-point lead near the end of the period. The Bulls went to Jordan at the end of quarter. Jordan scored on a 3-point play and then stole the ball and dunked to bring his team within 76-75. A Dave Corzine free throw tied it until Drexler swished a 3-pointer at the buzzer. to out the Blazers ahead 79-76.

Rick Adelman unveils a press and Portland beats Miami 124-102 to halt a six-game losing streak and left the Miami Arena Sunday night carrying a basketball, and that was symbolic. Not only did the new Portland Trail Blazer coach pick up his first National Basketball Association win, he had a lot to do with the way the 124-102 triumph over the Miami Heat came about -- and had the game ball to remember it by.
Portland's win stopped a six-game losing streak, brought the Blazers back to the .500 mark at 26-26 and gave Adelman a win after four losses since taking over from Mike Schuler as Portland coach. But even more important than all that, the game signaled a new personality for Blazer basketball. Adelman last week -- with little practice time and a limited number of healthy players -- installed a three-quarter court pressing defense and Sunday night he finally pulled the trigger on it. The Heat, which had won three of their previous four games including a win over the Atlanta Hawks, never knew what hit it. ``That was a great move by Rick,'' said Portland guard Clyde Drexler, who chalked up his second straight and 10th career triple-double with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. ``The press really `up-tempoed' the game for us. We've got the speed and personnel to do that -- it's going to be great for us.'' |
The Blazers were muddling along in the second quarter without a lot of fire when Adelman put his team in the 2-2-1 press with four minutes to play before halftime. In the final 3 1/2 minutes of the half, the Blazers forced five Miami turnovers, rattled off 14 staight points and went into the locker room with a 61-46 lead. Portland opened the second half with the same defense and scored six of the first eight points to take a 67-48 advantage. Miami was finished.
``We were very active and we took them out of their offense with our press,'' Adelman said. ``I've been talking about doing that all week and I told the guys we were going to do it tonight, no matter what. ``I just wanted the players to know that we're going to give up some layups with it, but we've been giving up layups, anyway. This gets us going a little bit. I think it's going to be good for us.'' Indeed, Drexler, Jerome Kersey and Terry Porter are natural ballhawks who thrive in the open court. Schuler talked about it but never turned them loose in a full- or three-quarter court defense, but Adelman plans to press and trap much of the rest of the season. That's good news for the fans. When the Blazers pressed Sunday, they were wild and crazy -- and more fun to watch than they've been all season. ``We have the people who can do it,'' Adelman said. Still, even the coach was a little surprised at how effective the defense became. ``Our athleticism just took over,'' he said. The one thing that will inhibit the Blazers' trapping plans will likely be a lack of manpower. Steve Johnson sat out the game because of a broken nose he suffered Friday night at Cleveland. Then guard Jerry Sichting had to leave in the second quarter because of a flareup in his right foot of the plantar fasciaitis that sidelined him early in the season. |
Johnson, the third Blazer of the season to suffer a broken nose, is not expected to be out long, but Sichting may be -- leaving the Blazers with their two starting guards and Brook Steppe, who was signed Saturday out of the Continental Basketball Association. Steppe, who has NBA experience with three teams, made a solid debut. He hit 3 of 5 shots, including two 3-point goals, and scored eight points. Kersey had five steals and 14 points, Kevin Duckworth 24 points and five rebounds, and Porter 19 points and 10 assists. Sam Bowie found his shot-blocking rhythm and scored 10 points to go with his three blocks. The win was just as much fun for Bowie as for Adelman. After missing the last 2 1/2 seasons, Bowie came back to play in six straight Portland losses.
``Rick had been waiting for his first win for four games,'' Bowie said. ``But it's been three years since I won a game. I'm real happy for Rick, though. The guy deserves better than we've been playing. I know one thing right now -- you're going to see a lot more pressing out of us the rest of the season.'' BLAZER NOTES: Portland shot 54.6 percent from the floor and held the Heat to 43.3 percent. . . . Billy Thompson scored 25 points to lead Miami, which fell to 8-45. . . . Richard Anderson played 21 minutes for the Blazers and was solid. He made all four of his shots, had five rebounds, four assists and two steals. . . . Portland plays host to the Phoenix Suns Tuesday night in Memorial Coliseum. |

Damian Lillard scored a career-high 71 points, tied for the 8th most points in NBA History. Lillard is the 2nd player to top 70 points this season, after Donavan Mitchell also scored 71 points on Jan 3. Lillard was 22 of 38 from the field, including 13 of 22 from 3-point range, and made all 14 of his free throws. He’s the first player in NBA history to score at least 70 points in a game without missing a free throw. Lillard’s 13 3-pointers made are tied for the second-highest single-game total in NBA history, but is the highest in Blazers History. The total bests the record of 11 set by Lillard twice during the 2019/20 season. In the process, he made his 200th 3-pointer of the season, the 8th time he has reached that mark. That is tied for the 2nd-most such seasons in NBA history. |

The Blazers lost their 10th straight game amongst many pushes, shoves, and swings of fists. Between Bob Christian and Dale Schlueter having one incident that landed a 1 inch gash on Schlueter's chin to Pete Maravich and Larry Steele having their own skirmish, but then throw in the verbal incident between Hawk coach Richie Guerin and Blazers rookie Sidney Wicks as well as Lou Hudson and Stan McKenzie, you had one heck of a game.

The @trailblazers first #LeapYear Game was a home contest with the @chicagobulls in town and the #Blazers looking to snap a 10-game losing streak after a heated contest in #Atlanta with the @ATLHawks just the other day.
The #Bulls took the lead from the start in the "rough game", at least according to Chicago coach #DickMotta, who complained enough to earn a Technical a little over 4 minutes into the 2nd quarter. Bulls center #TomBoerwinkle was inadvertently poked in the eye by Blazers forward #StanMcKenzie and dropped to the floor with no foul called. Motta earned his 1st T after complaining.

Motta earned a second T just :47 seconds later due to language directed towards the referees, was ejected, and had to listen to #BillSchonely call the game on a radio provided by the Blazers ball-boys. Less than a minute later, Bulls guard #JerrySloan hit his teammate #CliffordRay across the face, but blamed Blazers center #DaleSchlueter. Sloan says his and Schlueter's arms were tangled initially and when he broke free, his follow thru hit Ray. Sloans backcourt mate #NormVanLier earned a T when he moved off the bench and onto the floor after the referees.
#ChetWalker scored 30 points to lead all scorers with #BobLove adding 21 more. Sloan grabbed 15 rebounds for Chicago, who were coached by #PhilJohnson after Motta was ejected. #SidneyWicks and #GeoffPetrie each scored 20 points but were a combined 16 of 41 FGA. Wicks did grab 15 rebounds. #LarrySteele earned high praise with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals.

The @Blazers evened their #LeapYear record to 1-1 with the home victory vs the @ATLHawks but it was a battle in the final quarter. Entering the 4th quarter with a 20 point lead, the #Blazers soon allowed the #Hawks to make it a game when rookie guard #WilburHolland scored a career-high 20 points. In the 4th quarter! Holland had never even scored double figures in any game previous. In fact, Holland had scored a total of 28 points in the 14 games he had played before today. Holland would be play for the @chicagobulls during the 1976/77 season and make his presence known again to Blazer fans in the playoffs, but that is for another post.
#SidneyWicks and #GeoffPetrie each scored 20 points in the win, with Wicks grabbing 13 rebounds. It is the 15th, and final time, that Wicks and Petrie tied for scoring honors in the same game. #SteveHawes, starting at center for the injured #BillWalton, scored 13 points and gathered 13 rebounds. #JohnDrew, who scored 42 points the last time the 2 teams met, led the Hawks with 32 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

Playing in his first game in front of the home fans, #BillyRayBates scored 13 points in the 2nd half but a costly turnover with 31 seconds remaining sealed the @trailblazers home loss to the @utahjazz. Bates, who was signed by the #Blazers just a week ago and was playing in his 2nd @NBA game, hit 10 of 16 FGA in his 17 minutes of play. #CalvinNatt, acquired in a trade for #MauriceLucas only 17 days ago, scored 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. #AdrianDantley scored 23 points, 15 of which were in the 2nd half. Dantley was a member of the @Lakers before a trade to the #Jazz prior to season starting. #LosAngeles had offered Dantley to the Blazer before trading to him to Utah, but the Portland Front Office turned down the offer. |

@JeromeKersey25 scored 33 points in then @trailblazers #LeapYear victory vs the new-look @cavs. Kersey has been a consistent starter this season, his 4th with the #Blazers, replacing the oft-injured @kikiVandewghe. Kersey would score a career-best 19.2 points in the 1987/88 season and finished in the Top-5 for #MostImprovedPlayer Award. The #Cavaliers recently acquired forward #LarryNance from the @Suns. The father of future #Blazers player @Larrydn22 scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in his 1st start. |
