Robin Jones Traded to Houston For Tom Owens
The Portland Trail Blazers made their 2nd roster move since winning the NBA Championship by trading their backup center Robin Jones and an undisclosed amount of cash to the Houston Rockets for Tom Owens. The Blazers will be the eighth team for Owens in his seven-year career. “I wouldn’t feel right if I wasn’t moving again,” said Owens from his off-season home in Columbia, South Carolina.
Jones, who was unavailable for comment, joined the Blazer as a rookie free agent last summer and averaged 5.5 points and 4.7 rebounds in 62 games while averaging 17 minutes backing up Bill Walton. In the 17 games that Walton was unavailable, Jones averaged 11.6 points and 9.9 rebounds in 34.8 minutes of play. Owens was acquired by the Rockets as a free agent after spending five seasons in the ABA |

Dale Schlueter, an original Blazer with the expansion team of 1970, was reacquired today from the Phoenix Suns for a conditional fourth round draft pick in the 1978 NBA College Draft. “I’m happy,” said Schlueter, “primarily because I’m back in Portland and secondly. I’ll be playing under Jack Ramsey again.”
Schlueter played two seasons in Buffalo under Ramsey, going to the playoffs in both seasons. “Jack’s concept was the same in Buffalo,” Schlueter said referring to the Blazers recent season. “The only problem was when we got to the playoffs the players wanted to do it themselves, not Jack’s way.” Schlueter lives in Portland and has talked with Ramsey all summer about joining the Blazer but "until today there was nothing definite." Schlueter was drafted by the Blazers in the expansion draft on May 11, 1970 from the San Francisco Warriors. Schlueter played two seasons in Portland, as a backup to LeRoy Ellis during the inaugural season of 1970-71 before starting the Blazers second year. Schlueter averaged 9.9 points and 8.8 rebounds in his two Blazer seasons. The Blazer traded Schlueter to Philadelphia on October 2, 1972 for Sixers guard Dave Wohl. Schlueter and the Sixers were infamously involved with a fight with Blazers LaRue Martin, Terry Dischinger, and Bob Davis and Sixer Mike Price during the Blazers 135-102 victory on January 5, 1973. All five players would eventually be suspended by the NBA, and Schlueter apologized the next day saying, “I’m very sorry it happened, especially here in Portland. I like Portland and want to make it my home. I don’t want people to have a bad image of me.” |
